IOM Rd.1: Nihal holds Akobian Isle of Man is very special for Nihal as for the first time in life he is playing among his favorites, GM Viswanathan Anand, GM Vladimir Kramnik and World Champion Magnus Carlsen. Thanks to the support and love from Isle of Man organizers, Nihal has the opportunity to play his best chess against world-class opposition.

Nihal faced strong opposition in from of GM Akobian Varuzhan, who is U.S.A’s sixth highest rated player, at the first round.

Akobian Varuzhan is a strong Grandmaster. His recent achievements include being the second runner-up at the US Open Chess Championship, behind GM Wesley So and GM Alexander Onischuk.

Akobian started with the d pawn opening and the game soon transposed to Fianchetto System of Queen’s Indian Defence.  The game moved further after both the fianchettoed bishops were swapped off the board, leaving Black a slight advantage. However, on move 32 both the players have agreed to a draw because there was no clear progress to be made.
